Mel Orpilla -  No History, No Self... Know History, Know Self
Happy Holidays to every one. As 2008 comes to a close, I like to reflect back on
some important life changes that occurred in my life this past year.
  • December 30 - Nazario Orpilla, 101, my father, passed away from a stroke.
  • January 3 - Laid my father to rest at All Souls Cemetary in Vallejo
  • June 3 - Hosted the first Vallejo Goodwill Filipino Martial Arts Tournament
  • July 1 - Filed for divorce from my wife of 17 years
  • August - Joined FaceBook and have over 200 friends
  • September - Moved to my mom's house
  • November 8 - Opened new Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Office
    Building

I continue to work at my job as the  Community & Government Relations
Manager for Kaiser Permanente. At the same time I volunteer in the community
as the Managing Director of the Bayanihan Center and the Executive Director
of Filipino American Social Services.

My cultural work includes further studies and training in Balintawak Arnis;
researching, writing and speaking about the Filipino American experience; and
promoting traditional Filipino tattoos. I enjoy photography and travel and hope
to go on several trips in 2009. One of which is to Sayulita, Mexico and hopefully
back to the Philippines.

That's my year in a nutshell. It had its ups and downs but everything works out
for the best. I am looking forward in 2009 with an open mind and an open heart.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful a Happy New Year.

I am an Amang in the  Tatak ng Apat na Alon
(Mark of Four Waves) Philippine tattoo tribe.
Part of our Mission is to give lectures and impart our
knowledge of traditional Filipino tattooing.
I am the first in the tribe to recieve one and maybe the first
in 50 years to have one done anywhere. The four hour
tattoo was very painful but worth the effort.
